“Nothing is certain except Debt and Taxes” - Eridanii Proverb
Pogonia debitum tiberium[]
When it comes time that a debt need to be paid there is no easier way than to deliver the debtor a black and red orchid from Tiber. Native to the tropical planet, the orchids have been bred and engineered to be darker and more red over the centuries.
One of the most ominous gifts one can receive is a bouquet of debtor’s orchids. In this form, each flower signifies a debt of ten thousand credits. Upon receiving a bouquet one knows that there is not a long time until an Exchequer or other debt collector comes looking to make sure the debt is paid.
Traditionally gifting a debtor's orchid signifies to the receiver “You owe a great debt.” However, they are sometimes used as a pleasant gift to say “I am in your debt; if you need my assistance return the flower and I will pay that debt.” Despite growers and vendors of the flowers, specifically warning about the misuses of orchids, confusion over these contradictory interpretations has lead to much paranoia and worry. These mixed messages are famously the subject of several Lyran and PRISM comedies.
